How to set a daily loss limit in NinjaTrader 8
To set a daily loss limit in NinjaTrader, first check the risk settings available for your account. For chart-integrated controls, Nexus Chart Trader lets you configure daily loss rules in Account Risk Studio and apply them to the accounts you choose.
A daily loss lock answers a different question from a trade stop: when should this account stop accepting new trades for the session? Decide that before trading begins, then verify what the software measures and what action it takes.
See the setup workflowCompare risk-management toolsDoes NinjaTrader already have a daily loss limit?
Yes, supported NinjaTrader accounts have native account-level risk settings. In the NinjaTrader Dashboard, open your profile, choose Settings, then Accounts and Risk Settings. Available controls depend on the account and provider. These settings are separate from the Chart Trader panel on a desktop chart.
Check the P/L basis shown for your actual account. NinjaTrader's brokerage guide describes daily limits using realized P/L, while its Prop documentation describes an equity-based daily cap. An open losing trade can therefore be treated differently across account arrangements. Do not assume that a setting with the same name uses the same calculation.
Start with the official NinjaTrader risk-settings guide and your provider's instructions. Native account controls may already meet your needs. An add-on becomes useful when you also want rule configuration, position sizing and manual execution together on the chart.
How to configure daily loss protection in Nexus
- Choose the account deliberately. Open Account Risk Studio and identify the exact account you want to protect. Enable its risk profile. An account appearing in NinjaTrader is not proof that you have enrolled it in a Nexus risk rule.
- Set the daily loss amount before the session. Use separate funded and evaluation profiles when appropriate, then review any account-specific overrides. Check the session boundary and the account value from which the daily calculation begins.
- Review the other rules that can stop trading. A profit goal, trailing drawdown, loss-streak cooldown, trading schedule or news restriction may act independently of the daily loss rule. Understand which condition would take effect first.
- Verify the configuration in simulation. Simulation protection must be enabled for the relevant test account. Use a controlled test to observe the threshold, order handling, lock status and reset behavior before using the configuration on an evaluation or live account.
For the complete interface and installation instructions, use the Nexus downloads and documentation area. If your account provider's behavior is unclear, contact Nexus support with the provider and connection type before purchasing.
What happens when the daily loss threshold is reached?
Illustrative sequence, not a trade recommendation or execution guarantee
- Before trading: a trader chooses a $300 daily loss limit for one enabled account.
- During trading: Nexus compares the account's current net liquidation value with its session starting value. This daily account change includes realized and unrealized effects reflected in the account value.
- At the threshold: the daily loss rule triggers protective order handling and a trading lock. Nexus attempts to close positions and cancel working orders while preventing further Nexus entries.
- Afterward: the daily lock remains recorded through a platform restart until its applicable reset boundary. A restart is not a new trading session.
Orders still require execution. A trigger at −$300 does not promise a final loss of exactly $300: market movement, slippage, latency and account connectivity affect the result.
Daily lock, cooldown or broker lock: which one is it?
| Control | Purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Trade stop | Exit an individual position at a defined trigger. | Order type, quantity and actual working status. |
| Daily loss lock | Stop further trading after a session loss threshold. | Account enrollment, P/L baseline and session reset. |
| Consecutive-loss cooldown | Pause after the selected losing-trade condition. | Loss count, account or global scope and cooldown duration. |
| Confirmed server-side lock | Enforce a lock through a supported account service. | Connection eligibility and confirmation that the lock was accepted. |
Nexus supports persistent local locks and can request server-side locks on eligible supported Tradovate prop connections. Eligibility and confirmation matter. On other connections, local monitoring and order handling depend on NinjaTrader and the connection being operational. A saved lock state is not an offline broker service.
Using a lockout to interrupt revenge trading
Revenge trading often starts with a decision to recover the previous loss immediately. A rule chosen beforehand removes one decision from that moment: whether to keep entering after your stopping point. Daily-loss protection can end the session; a consecutive-loss cooldown can create a shorter pause.
The settings must match the behavior you want to interrupt. A dollar limit addresses total loss. A loss-streak rule addresses repeated losing trades. A schedule restricts when entries are allowed. None of these is the same as a maximum number of trades per day, and this page does not claim Nexus provides that separate feature.
Write down the stopping condition, confirm its scope, and review the session afterward. Software can enforce configured entry restrictions while it is operating; it cannot eliminate emotion, make a strategy profitable or prevent every trading loss. The practical objective is to make your predetermined rule visible and actionable.
Common daily-loss questions
Does unrealized loss count in Nexus Account Risk Studio?
The daily account rule uses the change in net liquidation value from the session baseline, so open P/L can affect it. This is different from a realized-only report. Confirm the values your account connection supplies.
Will changing accounts bypass a rule?
Daily rules are associated with enabled accounts. Configure every account you intend to protect and check global versus per-account settings for other protections. Smart Rotation chooses eligible accounts; it does not make an unconfigured account protected.
Does the lock reset at midnight?
Use the configured trading-session boundary, not an assumed local midnight. Cooldown rules have their own duration and should not be confused with daily session locks.
Is the daily loss lock a separate Nexus product?
No. These controls are included in Nexus Chart Trader for NinjaTrader 8. Both current license plans include the features: $299 for one year or $599 lifetime, with no automatic renewal.
Put the rule beside the execution controls
Nexus Chart Trader combines account risk rules with chart-based entries, dollar-risk sizing, visual risk/reward planning and bracket management. Review the full workflow and compatibility before choosing a plan.
