The Complete Guide to the
NinjaTrader Chart Trader

What the built-in NinjaTrader Chart Trader does, where it runs out of road, and how to upgrade it for funded-account trading.

Every NinjaTrader 8 install ships with a Chart Trader panel. This guide covers how to enable it, common problems, its real limits, and when prop firm and futures traders upgrade to a full add-on like Nexus Chart Trader (NCT).

What Is the NinjaTrader Chart Trader?

Chart Trader is NinjaTrader 8's free, built-in order-entry panel. It overlays the right edge of your chart with Buy Market and Sell Market buttons, a quantity selector, and draggable stop-loss / take-profit lines you can position directly on the price axis. It's enabled by right-clicking any chart and selecting Chart Trader, or toggling it from the chart's toolbar icon.

For simple discretionary trading — one account, one instrument, manual position sizing — the native panel is genuinely fine. It's fast, it's free, and it does exactly what it says: puts a market order on the chart in one click.

Where traders start searching for alternatives is the moment they need more than a single click: consistent dollar-risk sizing, brackets that survive a NinjaTrader restart, multiple funded accounts, or protection against a fat-fingered order during a fast market.

Where the Native Chart Trader Runs Out of Road

No Dollar-Risk Sizing

Native buttons fire a fixed quantity. There's no way to say "risk $200" and have position size calculate automatically from your stop distance — you do that math yourself, under time pressure.

No Persistent Risk Locks

Chart Trader has no concept of a daily loss limit or a cooldown after consecutive losses. Anything you set manually resets — or is forgotten — the moment NinjaTrader restarts or reconnects.

One Account at a Time

Trading two or three funded prop firm accounts means repeating every click across separate chart windows — there's no built-in rotation or parallel execution across accounts.

Chart Trader, SuperDOM, or an Upgraded Panel?

These get confused often, so here's the distinction: SuperDOM is a ladder-style order book showing bid/ask depth by price level — a separate window from your chart. Chart Trader is the panel attached to the chart itself. Nexus Chart Trader replaces that on-chart panel with a full execution and risk-management system.

NinjaTrader Chart Trader FAQ

What is the NinjaTrader Chart Trader?

Chart Trader is NinjaTrader 8's built-in order-entry panel that overlays your chart, letting you place Buy/Sell Market orders and drag stop-loss/take-profit lines directly on the price axis. It ships free with every NinjaTrader 8 install.

How do I turn on Chart Trader in NinjaTrader 8?

Right-click any chart, choose Chart Trader, and toggle it on — or click the Chart Trader icon in the chart's toolbar. If it's not visible, check that the chart window is wide enough and that Chart Trader hasn't been hidden via the chart properties panel.

Why is my NinjaTrader Chart Trader not showing orders or buttons correctly?

This is usually a connection issue (the account isn't connected to a live or sim data feed), a chart template conflict, or the panel being collapsed. Reconnecting the account and reopening the chart resolves most cases. Persistent issues are often related to third-party indicators conflicting with the panel — disable add-ons one at a time to isolate the cause.

Is Chart Trader the same as the SuperDOM?

No. SuperDOM is a separate ladder-style order book window showing bid/ask depth by price level. Chart Trader is a lightweight panel attached to the price chart itself. Many traders use both — SuperDOM for order flow visibility, Chart Trader (or an upgraded version of it) for fast, visual order placement on the chart.

Can I customize the native NinjaTrader Chart Trader buttons?

Only marginally — you can reposition the panel and adjust default quantity, but you cannot add new buttons, attach custom bracket logic, or build risk rules without writing NinjaScript or installing a third-party add-on such as Nexus Chart Trader.

What does Nexus Chart Trader add that the native panel doesn't have?

Nexus Chart Trader (NCT) replaces the native panel with custom entry buttons (bar-close, POP, buy-dip), dollar-risk position sizing, tamper-proof daily risk locks that survive restarts, auto-breakeven, Smart Rotation across prop firm accounts, and Gang Mode multi-account execution — all for a one-time $499 lifetime license.
